Town of Hebron to Launch CS Campaign

SALEM, NY - Town of Hebron Supervisor Brian Campbell and the Hebron Climate Smart Communities Task Force today announced a new campaign to bring the benefits of community solar to Hebron residents. A kick-off event celebrating the campaign will take place on July 23rd from 2:00 pm to 4.00 pm at R.S. Taylor & Sons Brewery, 3602 County Route 30, where residents will have an opportunity to learn about community solar and its benefits. With electricity prices rising, there has never been a better time to save money by enrolling in community solar.
“By launching this campaign, we’re raising awareness that community solar is a practical step residents can take to save money on utilities,” said Town Supervisor Brian Campbell. “I encourage residents to explore the benefits of community solar for your home or business.”
Community solar is a solar farm that generates utility bill credits based on the amount of electricity produced by the solar panels. As a subscriber, a portion of those credits are applied directly on the electric bill each month to offset the charges. Even though savings will vary from month to month, subscribers are guaranteed to save 10 percent of the value of the community solar credits applied to their bill.
With community solar, no solar panels are installed on the subscriber’s roof or property. There is no change to the subscriber’s electricity supplier. There are no sign-up or cancelation fees. Just savings on the utility bill. It’s hassle-free and costs nothing. Most everyone is eligible - homeowners, renters, farmers, small businesses, houses of worship, and others.
Today in New York State, more than 200,000 customers are enrolled in community solar, accounting for more than 1 gigawatt of clean, renewable electricity. Anyone who enrolls in community solar is contributing directly to the development of new renewable energy resources in New York State and the goal of generating 70 percent of the state’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Successful completion of the campaign will also help position the Town to earn grants and recognition through state clean energy and climate programs.
Hebron’s community solar campaign, which will run through the end of the summer, will use social media, mailings, and public events to encourage residents to enroll in community solar. After a thorough pre-qualification process, the Hebron Town Council unanimously approved the selection of PowerMarket as the designated community solar provider for the campaign. PowerMarket will subscribe customers and provide outreach planning assistance, funding for marketing materials, and customer support services. Participating residents will be connected to a 7.5 megawatt DC solar project located 200 miles from Hebron in Cortland County. The campaign is being led by the Hebron Climate Smart Communities Task Force which was formed in January 2022 to promote clean energy and sustainability initiatives in the Town. Volunteer committee members will serve as campaign ambassadors and assist with spreading the word about educational events, answering questions from the public, providing insight and guidance as the campaign progresses, and any other needs identified during the campaign.

Hebron is the first municipality in Washington County to register under this Department of Environmental Conservation program. Hebron is also a NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities participant.
