Meet Sondra: Driving Impact in Clean Energy Finance
Sondra McMahon, PowerMarket’s Corporate Controller, just hit her four-year mark at PowerMarket, so we sat down to trace her path back to the beginning. Her passion for this work started at the dinner table, talking about energy-efficient homes, and in the barn, riding horses and working alongside farmers. Here's where that passion came from, and how it's carried her all the way to leading PowerMarket's books.
Coming from the small town of Homer, New York, I’m an Upstate New York native. I grew up on my family’s farmland, spending my days outdoors riding horses with my big sister. Just as much as I loved being outside, I loved being in school, and math quickly became my favorite subject, because there was always an answer, always a reconciliation. That passion followed me to SUNY Binghamton, where I earned my degree in Actuarial Science.
After graduating, I began my career at an insurance company. While I enjoyed the work, I knew something was missing. My next role as an agricultural financial analyst was where everything clicked. It was incredibly rewarding to work alongside farmers every day while still doing what I loved most—working with numbers. It was there that I realized a career in finance could also have a meaningful impact.
That realization eventually led me to PowerMarket. My dad spent his career building green energy homes, so conversations around our dinner table often revolved around solar energy, wind power, and sustainability. When he built our family home, he even incorporated geothermal heating and cooling using our pond. I grew up watching those ideas take shape in our lives, and clean energy became an important value for me because of it. When I came across a job posting where I could spend my days doing math while contributing to a clean energy mission, I knew I had found the perfect fit with PowerMarket.
I recently celebrated four years with PowerMarket, and I couldn’t be happier. There are three reasons I believe so strongly in this company. First, the work is incredibly rewarding. Between the positive clean energy impact and the savings we provide to our customers, it’s a mission I’m proud to support. Second, I genuinely love what I do each day. Excel is my favorite tool, with QuickBooks as a close second. Working with numbers, reconciliations, and financial reporting is what I’m most passionate about. Finally, it’s the people. When you bring together kind, intelligent, and driven individuals, amazing things happen. As the company continues to grow, the sense of camaraderie has remained the same. With each new addition to the team comes new ideas, new friendships, and new success for the company.
Since my first days at PowerMarket, I’ve focused on financial reporting for our customers. I spend most of my day in Excel, which to me is a treat. Digging into the numbers has given me a firsthand view of just how meaningful our work is: in 2025 alone, our subscribers saved more than $15 million. Our billing and reporting team works seamlessly together, and every day we contribute to the company’s mission through meticulous attention to detail, continuous process improvements, and the knowledge that our work makes a real difference in people’s lives.
Over the past four years, I've learned so much about the clean energy industry, from government policies to utility statements, through hands-on experience and the expertise of my coworkers. Recently, I stepped into the role of Corporate Controller, and I’m excited to continue expanding my knowledge of accounting and finance. Everything the company stands for is exactly why I see my future here, learning, growing, and making a positive impact in the communities we serve.
My favorite way to practice sustainability is surprisingly simple: I rarely turn on the overhead lights in my house. I much prefer natural light during the day and the ambiance of candles in the evening. Outside of work, you can always find my golden retriever, Goose, by my side. My perfect evening includes cooking dinner, taking a long walk with Goose, and getting lost in a good book. On weekends, I’m usually spending time with my best friend or heading home to visit my parents. No matter where life takes me, all roads lead back to the acres of family farmland and the pond where Goose happily spends his summers swimming.
